Echocardiographic Evaluation of Mitral Annulus Excursion in Normal Horses
نویسنده
چکیده
Echocardiographic evaluation of systolic function is important for determination of the hemodynamic state in different cardiomyopathies to provide information for an informed prognosis and proper treatment. During each systole, the heart produces a displacement of the mitral annulus that is quantitatively related to the intensity of the ventricular contraction. This displacement, measured in two-dimensional guided Mmode, constitutes mitral annulus excursion (MAE). This value is a reliable index of left ventricular systolic function. The normal value of the MAE was determined in 30 cardiologically healthy horses. Measurements were made of the displacement of the mitral annulus in the parietal (MAEp) and septal (MAEs) portions, and their indices were calculated as a function of body weight. Statistical correlation was determined for MAEs and MAEp versus body weight. Vol. 2, No. 2, 2004 • Intern J Appl Res Vet Med 110 measured by M-mode echocardiography in normal dogs and in dogs with cardiac disease to evaluate systolic left ventricular long axis performance. However, this index has never been used for routine evaluations or as measure of systolic dysfunction in horses. The purpose of this study was to establish the echocardiographic technique for evaluation of equine MAE, to define its normal reference values for septal and parietal portions, and to establish the index value of MAE relative to body weight. Mean values for MAE in their two portions were compared and the correlation between the values of both excursions and body weight was determined. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Normal pulsed wave Doppler echocardiographic parameters of Turkmen horses of Iran
Turkmen horse is one of the oldest and purest breeds in the world, but there is no information on Doppler echocardiographic parameters in this horse. In the present study, pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography was performed on 42 clinically normal 3- to 15-year-old racing Turkmen horses. No cardiac disease was detected with two-dimensional (2-D) real-time, M-mode, and colour flow mapping. D...
متن کاملEchocardiographic findings in athletic horses with pulmonary regurgitation
BACKGROUND: Determining the clinical significance of cardiac murmurs is widely considered in equine practice. Pulmonary murmurs are commonly detected in athletic horses. Echocardiography plays a leading role in assessment of these murmurs. OBJECTIVES: Echocardiographic evaluation of horses with pulmonary regurgitation and determining the importance of pulmonary valve murmurs. METHODS: A total n...

A prototype multiple crystal echocardiographic system developed by Bom and associates was used to evaluate cross-sectional cardiac anatomy in real time in twenty infants and children with endocardial cushion defect (ECD). The findings were compared to fifty normal infants and children and nineteen patients with normal mitral valve anatomy but right ventricular enlargement (RVE). Three standard ...

AIMS Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder frequently linked to methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2) gene mutations. RTT is associated with a 300-fold increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Rhythm abnormalities and cardiac dysautonomia do not to fully account for cardiac mortality. Conversely, heart function in RTT has not been explored to date. Recent data indicate a previ...
